How to manage DNS records
DNS records allow you to connect your domain name to other services, like external email providers or specialized web hosting.
What are DNS Records?
Think of your domain name (e.g., yourdomain.com) like a business name in a directory. DNS records are the specific instructions for where to send traffic for that name:
- A Records: Point your domain to a web server's address (IPv4).
- CNAME Records: Forward one web address to another.
- MX Records: Tell email where to go.
- TXT Records: Usually used for verification purposes by services like Google Workspace.
How to Manage Your DNS
- Login to the Callahtech Management Console.
- Select your domain.
- Go to the DNS tab.
Caution: DNS records are powerful. Incorrect changes can cause your website or email to stop working. We recommend only making changes when you've received instructions from the service you're trying to connect.
Adding a New DNS Record
- Click New.
- Select the Type of record (e.g.,
A,MX,TXT). - Fill in the Name field (use
@for your main domain). - Enter the Value or Address provided by your service.
- Click Save.
Common DNS Values
- Name: This is the part before your domain. Use
@for the main domain (e.g.,yourdomain.com). Usewwwforwww.yourdomain.com. - TTL: This is how long other servers will remember your record. We recommend leaving this at the default.
- Priority: Used specifically for MX records to determine which email server is the primary.
Note: Changes to DNS records can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to spread across the internet.
